With January upon us, it marks a good time of the year to take a look at how we’re feeling and identify small changes that will help you feel even better. Exercise has been scientifically proven to elevate our mood, improve sleep and our general physical wellbeing. So, whether it’s stepping outside in nature, attending a class with a friend or just walking to work, it’s the perfect time to experience the benefits of being active!
Here are our top tips to stop you stalling and get you started:
1. Sign up to Woking Parkrun
Woking’s Parkrun takes place every Saturday morning at 9am in Woking Park. The 5k distance is suitable for both beginners and experts and is a great way to perfect your running technique or beat your personal best! Parkrun is free to enter which is good news for those January budgets and registration is easily completed on their website. If you’re feeling social, there’s an open invitation to join the running regulars for a coffee at Woking Leisure Centre’s Costa Coffee after the run, a great way to compare running tips!

2. Join a fitness centre
Woking has a range of gyms that are perfect for improving your fitness levels.
Freedom Leisure runs two leisure centres in Woking. The new Sportsbox, located in Egley Road, features a state-of-the-art gym, an extensive and varied group exercise programme, a range of indoor and outdoor pitches as well as the best 400m athletics track in the region.

5. Step up to the Surrey Half Marathon
Why not challenge yourself and sign up for the Surrey Half Marathon on Sunday 8th March? If you’re new to running, the 5k race is the perfect starting goal to embrace the sporting atmosphere and feel a real sense of achievement. Or why not get the whole family involved with a 2k race for the kids! All races leave from Woking Leisure Centre, where there will be food and drink vendors available, as well as a TV screen for those who want to cheer their loved ones on but don’t fancy braving the cold!
